Those pesky vsv's

WRAPPING UP MY NEW/USED TRANNY INSTALLATION AND FOUND A VSV (VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE) WHICH APPARENTLY HAD BEEN BROKEN AND NOT FUNCTIONING IN PROBABLY QUITE SOME TIME.

THE VSV IS BOLTED TO THE SUPERCHARGER CASE JUST BELOW THE COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG. IT APPARENTLY ACTIVATES THE AIR CONTROL VALVE, OR RATHER SHOULD. IT APPEARS I USED THE VSV ON THE REAR FIREWALL TO CONTROL THIS FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS. MY BAD. BUT IT WORKED.

I NOW SUSPECT THIS VSV ON THE FIREWALL CONTROLS THE FUEL LINE "PRESSURE UP" FUNCTION OF THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR BOLTED TO THE FUEL RAIL.

I HAVE BEEN ABLE JUMP THE VSV'S W 12V WHILE BLOWING AIR THRU THE VSV TO DETERMINE THAT BOTH VSV ARE FUNCTIONING. THE LITTLE PLASTIC NIPPLE THAT ACCEPTS THE 1/8" RUBBER NOSE WAS BROKEN OFF AND THE REPAIR CONSISTED OF USING MONKEY GLUE TO GLUE IT INTO POSITION. LOTS OF GLUE, TO ASSURE RIDGIDITY AND SEALING. HEY ONCE PAINTED IT LOOKS OEM.

AHH.. YES, THE JOYS AND DISCOVERIES OF MAINTAINING WHAT IS NOW THE ONLY ANTIQUE TOYOTA SPORTS CAR WITH A SUPERCHARGER EVER IMPORTED TO THE USA.

I think that this was for vapor lock suppression. Not normally a problem, but in the early '80s Toyota had some severe hot starting problems. I suspect that they instituted a policy of zero tolerance for hot starting delays before their brand got trashed.
