4agze rebuild questions

This past weekend I picked up a 1988 supercharged mr2. The previous owner said it had a head gasket leak and for some reason he decided to tear the whole engine apart. Which turned out to be a good thing. But everything say for a good five years as the previous owner lost interest,time, and money.

As this is still the orginal parts I'd like to just rebuild and not go with a jdm 4agze yet.

I checked the head and block for flatness and everything seems good enough (not excessively warped) to be machined flat again.

One of the cylinders has a light scoring to it. It barely catches a finger nail. Here's a picture of it...with a LED flashlight on it


The pistons that came with the engine are the original stock ones. Since it's been disassembled and moved around though the rings have been damaged (bent, fallen off, ect)

This will be my first full engine rebuild so just want to make sure of some things....

1) I am thinking I will just grab new, oversized pistons and have the blocked bored and honed to fit.

2) I am thinking of getting the 8.9:1 compression pistons. Toyota P/N 13103-16131(and the ovresized rings of course)

3) the previous owner had a 175mm sc crank pulley put on at some point. Also included was a stock pulley. I'll probably start with stock and down the road swap again.

4) the supercharger was rebuilt and only has approx 40k miles on it.

5) I'll do new main and rod bearings. And full gasket set

6) the only thing I know 100 percent I need is the lifter buckets and shims.

So does that all seem like a good start? Forgetting something?

I'm sure I'll have more questions down the road as things go back together.

Add a new cam belt while rebuilding and check the belt idler. A lot of belt kits come with a idler pulley. Davew

I actually already planned to replace all the belts. And a lot of things like the oil pump, water pump, ect type stuff. But good reminder

Are those pistons and rings still available from Toyota?

It's not looking like it for actual Toyota ones. I had contacted a company and they said they had them but been a few days after ordering and still nothing.

If that doesn't work out I'll probably go with a set from matrix garage...either 8.5:1 or 9:1

For the love of all that's holy, do not break your knock sensor. They are an alloy of 46% Unicorn Horn 53% Hen's Molars 1% Unobtanium, and Toyota will want to own the souls of the next 18 generations of your family for a new one. Put it in a vault wrapped in cotton wool and don't smash it moving the head etc...
