I wouldn't pay to have extensive head work on the fe head, if I were going to do any extensive engine work, it would be to the bottom end, paired with the cams, to let the engine spin higher, and run a higher static comp. ratio. If the head was truly that large of a limiting factor, then a 3sge head would probably be better than any 5sfe head flow work.

I think aside from the cam, the engine flows fine though and that's what gives it the characteristic bottom/mid end punch, is the angle/size of the ports. Are you the one who bought the 3sge from the guy in Irving/ft worth, or somewhere over there, for a couple hundred bucks? That came out of the car I almost bought about this time last year lol. MR2Source is his user name on here I believe.

And I'm well aware of the potency of boost from other previous projects and my current long term intermittent hard parked, no longer daily driven project lol.

I'll be happy if I drop $300 total into the reground cams and shims then tack on another $350 for the OBX long 4-1 headers (not the other fleabay short runner 4-1 headers with like 10" primaries before the merge) and a catback, and fiddle with the timing and fueling and pull out 125-135whp and have a powerband that reaches up to factory redline though. That's all I am aiming for initially, and if I enjoy it beyond that, I may work it over more simply because I've been looking for another n/a engine I like enough to build up N/A.

I want to enhance the powerband and widen it primarily, not hunting a big number on the hp line, just seeing what can be done without really even breaking a sweat for someone with a bit of skill and some ppocket change to donate to his mr2 daily drive now and then.

Think... mature teenage ricer who knows what mods do and do not yield performance gains and isn't just picking parts from a catalog/magazine ad... then finding the cheapest thing on ebay that looks like them. lol I don't think an intake/headers/exhaust/cams integra or civic is rice by default... I think a stock car with a muffler 5 times the size their engine displaces, and who does ricer fly-by's on anything that moves is stupid... but I respect anyone who likes to turn a wrench and make stuff scoot along more briskly, so long as it's tasteful and semi-purposeful. Any mods bought from an aisle at Vatozone probably fall into my description of "tasteless".

If you are shooting for 135 rwhp, I think with a decent header, cams and proper mainetnance you should make it. No need to fool with the bottom end. Might be worth looking at a PNP ECU.
I swapped MR2source a MKI chassis for the motor and some other parts. I have put a new gasket set on it and mated it to a stouter pressure plate and a cheap short primary header. I think it should be fun in a MKI that should be on the lighter end of 2200lbs. It is a total scrap yard car. I am swapping or scrounging for just about everything.

I may cave and get a turbo even though I know I shouldn't, but people local all want $4500 for busted ass N/A's and yet turbo's in mint condition with low 100k miles pop up regularly for $5-6k lol... I may not have a choice.

It's pissing me off... but in the end I may just end up with two, a minty turbo to daily and a cheap roller with a mild 5sfe in it to do some light reliable cheap track duty or something to that effect.

I am becoming increasingly discouraged by sellers.

theres not anyone whos actually built one, and no one hit 180whp. the guy with the british racing green mr2 had the most built 5sfe, and he sold it before it ran (there was some story behind it).

even jim had the most mild grind cams in his car.. no ones really tried to make power.

lots of people thought the 30whp thing was a fluke, until other people started doing it, on different dynos. its a max gain, not a peak gain, but thats still tons of power gained. again, 130whp doesnt sound like much.. but its big broad power, and it makes the car run mid 14's. it takes much more power out of a G head to go as fast. the gen2 3sge doesnt do it, the gen3 doesnt even do it..

its really a big jump in speed, and its cheap. i dont get why so many people are down on it. cheap regrinds and a header hardly cost anything, and its a days work to get them in and running. the dyno numbers dont really mean anything.

Well stated. Too bad people around me want almost $5k for decently clean n/a's when I can buy amazingly clean turbos for $6k.. and at that point the n/a has no value for 1k less. It shouldn't be difficult to find a good clean running driving n/a for $3k. Problem is getting them local, been strugling.

I/H/E on my 5s made 115 iirc, swapped a gen2 3SGE never dynod stock but after a few setups I ended up back stock 2.0 with CatCam 256* 9mm lift and only other mod was a fpr, made 164/144 after "tuning" the fpr to make up for the extra power, engine had about 2-300 miles at the time

Never had it at a 1/4 mile but bogging the start on fd wheels it would do 9.3 in the 1/8th.. Highway speeds it would hang with lightly modded gte cars, I was happy for what it was

I made 135whp and 150wtq in my celica back in the day (2004) I only had bolt on parts; however, I did go through the engine. Factory max over bore '99 pistons, gapless rings, valves re-cut but nothing fancy, light port work etc. Everything was still considered inside of Toyota specifications.

A little late, but hopefully this will benefit someone who searches for this at some point.

I had a 92NA back in the day, it ran a 14,298 with crappy 215 wide all season tires(dyno scan is in the mr2 dyno list). Top end on any gear pulled away easily from my friends' 93T. Top speed was redline limited at 140mph.

The cams were from mr2pp (no longer in business, they were aggressive welded/reground cams). This changed the engines behavior considerably; top end came to life. It's the only reason I really think aggressive cams are needed on the 3sgte, Toyota stock cams seem to be way too conservative.

Here's the original dyno (intake + Cams, all else stock):
http://community.fortunecity.ws/silv...1/dynopic4.gif
123.8HP vs ~106 for most stock NAs.

To hit 14.3, it took:
ported head, 10:1 compression (milled head)
larger TB (not sure how much this helps)
headers (huge gain here, cat was also removed)
ignition coil and wires
some other minor mods were done
You will need a new clutch to hold the extra torque.
weight reduction (spare tire, tool kit, I had no A/C, no PS, I weighed less than 150)

This was not cheap but it was a fun ride and I had a blast seeing the gains at each stage.
