Sarrc/marrs @ vir

Made the 750 mile tow from St. Louis to VIR over the weekend to run VIR, a track that was on my bucket list. Let me say first, it was worth every mile. Great track, tremendous racing and one of the best executed events I've ever been to. Kudos to everyone who made it an exceptional event.

I'm a slow learner on new tracks, so the plan was to run as many laps as possible Friday and Saturday, then give it hell Sunday. By the time Sunday's race rolled around, I had made several setup changes which seemed to be helping. Qualifying went well and I ended up 3rd at a 2:24.911 behind Drew Strickland in a Civic (2:24.822) and polesitter Thomas Martin in a Golf (2:24.723)

At the start, I held onto Martin into Turn 2, while Strickland got shuffled backward. Martin was typically .5 or more seconds a lap faster, so he walked away. Strickland came up from quite a way back to pass me for second, but never could get in striking distance of Martin for the win. According to the NC Region web site, both Martin and Strickland were under the track record with Strickland going fastest at a 2:23.932. My best race time was a 2.25.319. Finishing 4th in ITB was Kevin Fryer, 5th Patrick Pegues and 6th was Chris Schimmel.

Here is a link to my in-car video. Please excuse the audio. That particular camera wasn't intended for this use.

That is some nice driving there. I was only able to skip through it at the moment. Will look more later.

I raced against Drew's dad Steve Strickland in that civic at VIR (I towed from FL). That is their home track, and speaking strictly about Steve he is very good there. Unfortunately both of our races were not ideal there and both Steve was able to get around me late in the race. On the Sunday race he actually got around me coming out of hog pen till the checker for the win. ohh well.

Qualifying I was able to do rather well and run a 2:23.8. I was very happy with that. I doubt I could keep race pace with that so we would probably be racing each other.

Martin in the MK3 is driving a much easier to drive car, you did very well.

Have you happened to race against the guys in the DC region?

Thanks, Steven! That was our first (but not last) trip to VIR or out east. Never ran with any of the guys before that weekend. Great bunch of guys. Had some great racing throughout the weekend and not even a close call with contact. Looking forward to our next trip out east. I was told repeatedly that the Summit Point race on Labor Day weekend is the one to hit.

We really enjoyed SARRC/MARRS at VIR and will be back next year. All I see in that video is the stupid mistakes I want to correct next time!
