Also interested to hear how these hubs are coming along. If the materials are good and the durability/specs fit, I'd be very interested in a set for my mk1.5

Hi Tim, I want to add your zerk fitting fix but how did you attach the zerks to the hub cap? It seems too thin to drill and tap it.


Also, do you guys always replace the hub nut each time you do the wheel bearings? These nuts are becoming harder to get. Part #90179-20003

Quadzjr- I've experienced any negativity of grease expanding. I suspect, but cannot confirm, that the grease filled cap allows the super hot bearing clearances to better lube the bearings.

You will find Toyota is very stingy with the amount of grease applied to the bearings during assembly at the factory.

After bolting in the zerk fitting I fill the cap full of grease, confirm the "O" ring is flexible and push/tap it on.

During my high speed "sprint car" weekends (2 driver car) I often give the zerk a short squeeze n Monday when I do a "safety check" after the race.

Unnormal-

You must purchase the Zerks with threads which "bolt" onto the inner cap. I would also suggest the use of a "thin" nut on the inside do to close tolerances. Also I strongly suggest using a nut glue to secure this nut. Check the cap's "O" ring at every cap pull. This "O" ring is noted as being non-reusable btw.

Page FA-7 indicates that the front bearing nut is NOT required to be replaced and can be reused (123ft/lbs) however outer seal is noted as NON-reusable.

Note: I use a local machine shop to press the bearing on and off. My personal experience indicated that the "races" are the problem not so much the bearing failing. The races on each side of the bearing fail to maintain correct clearances on the hub axle shaft and cause the "wobble".

Thanks for the pic.

I picked up some metric 8mm 1 zerk fittings so I'll see if I can find some nuts for them now. Mine are straight but I like your 90 deg ones, probably easier to access with the strut there.

So guys have re-used the nuts? Just notched the nut in a new spot then? That's good to know because Toyota seems to be the only supply for them now.
