Rally West Virginia July 27-28, 2013

Rally West Virginia is coming up fast and I have entered with my MK1.5 MR2. It is held around the ski resort of Snowshoe.

Stealing Jim's words from his ESPR post:
"For those off you unaware of just what these events are we basically take public roads, close them off to the public for a few hours at a time and race fully prepared rally cars down them at 1 minute intervals flat out.

This rally is run on the more traditional gravel or dirt roads.

Each car has fully safety equipment, a driver and a co-driver (aka navigator).
Intersections are manned by the local fire police as well as various police departments.
The start of each stage (as well as other points on longer stages) have ambulances and rapid response EMS medical units and all points of the stage are in contact via 2-meter ham radio communications.

If this sounds like a good time (and dare I say - it is) I would like to encourage you to go to our website and register as a volunteer marshal - if you can't make it up for the full event then I would encourage you to come up and spectate.

A good time will be had by all!"

Also, I'd really love to have some MR2 gurus to help crew for me. You never know what will fail at a rally (my last one I broke a CV on a jump day 1 and destroyed a shifting cable on day 2) and having someone knowledgable about the car in addition to me is great!

Let me know if you're interest at all and I'll give you additional details!

The car was great when it was working!

We broke another CV 14 miles into Special Stage 1. This time it just broke on a straight away. However, the front/rear engine mounts failed causing a lot more stress on the CV (which we believe is the cause of that misfortune). Here's the break #1:

(SS1 14mi/16mi)

Replaced the CV that night and attempted to fix the front/rear engine mounts (they didn't last long after the "fix"). Continued racing Sunday and set 2nd fastest 2WD time on SS7 before having misread note causing an off on SS8. The off caused the driverside engine mount to break and dropped the engine where only the CV axle was holding it up. Eventually the CV pulled out of the transmission and we came to a stop. We were able to hold the engine back up with a tow strap and pop the CV back in enough to make it back to the trailer.

(SS8 5mi/9mi)

So overall, it was a great event. We learned a lot about what we need to beef up to handle a real gravel stage rally (full skid plates, custom subframe/engine mount design, lock-tite EVERYTHING, etc).

I'll post up GoPro footage soon and any action pictures I find, soon!

Talking

Bummer, hopefully you can chase these problems down and get it 100% for the next round.

I was up at the New England Forest Rally - captain of stage crew 3.
Great event, perfect weather - everything went smoothly.

Here's a shot of winner (by 6.5 seconds) Ken Block - a very nice guy BTW.
