Thumbs up My Rally MR2, Built in 2002

Hi All,

I figured I would throw up a couple of pics of my stage rally MR2 that I built in 2002. Some of these photos have appeared in these forums before, some are new. I rally raced it for a couple of years before moving on to an Impreza. It was a fun car and I do miss it. The car changed hands a couple of time before meeting its end against a tree in ~ in 2007.

If you have any questions, let me know.

These three photos are from Oregon Trail Rally 2003. (Thanks Dad!)

Big thanks to Jerry Winker for this awesome photo from Rim of the World Rally 2003. It's just so cool to see this snap shot of RIM 2003. The condensation inside the lens sums up perfectly the RIM 2003 experience for most attendees. I'm sure someone had a great time / event / weekend at RIM 2003, not us. We did finish, got our pins to prove it. =-D I did experience rally driver nirvana (at least for me) on Magic Mountain, stage 1. Route book, MR2, night time, monsoon rain, fog, then no fog, then fog, then no fog, tarmac, gravel, mud, unexpected jump (in fog), two track, wide open road, more fog and rain. It was awesome!!!!!!!!!! So that one stage was the highlight of the week for me.

These two were shot at the inaugural Mt. Hood Rally, in 2002. Photo credit to Wayne Flynn, pdxsports.com.

Kannanaskis Canada, rally on the doughnut spare tire! Photo credit to Warwick Patterson, even though I paid for this one. =-)

Thanks for reading / looking.

the first picture in the second post makes the cars front end look like a lady wearing a bra, with some nice cleavage going on.

I've been organizing Ojibwe, Headwaters, Shooting Star and Nemadji rallies in MN for the last 10 years. Seen lots of different vehicles out there. My favorite thus far is Jim Cox's "Bluck" #558. Lots of work went into that truck and it is awesome to see it running the stages.

I have thought about turning mine into a rally car. If I do, I'll probably be asking you and Jim McClelland lots of questions about things like rollcage placement and such.

Thank you for all of your time vollunteering and organizing events! Give me a call anytime to talk about prep. It's not that bad really. Cage bit sucks since the cars are small...

Rally in a MR2 is tons of fun, there are 3 or 4 of us that Rallyx 1st gens out here in Hillsboro, OR (or at least did until we lost our field). MR2's aren't bad in the dirt, in stock form they don't like to turn in very well but a rear sway from a 85 helps with that. Now people that drive AWD or FW may say they are way too ass happy but I've never spun it in a event, I think it just comes down to what your used to.

Theres been a few other Rally MR2's throughout the states, I am if I ever get the time away from school building my 85 for group 2. There is also the 724 MK1 MR2 based out of Pennsylvania. There was a MK2 out in colorado as well that was powered by a 1mzfe that was up for sale a couple of years ago.

Yes, the 724 car was active up until this year. the 1mzfe SW20 car has not been run for a while as far as I know (since it sold?)

There was also a AW11 running in western canada about the time that I built my car. Sadly, it rolled into a non rallyable state ~ 2003.

I really want to build another one...

How'd you like the Kananaskis rally? Any idea if they still run it? I just moved to Calgary, would be a great thing to go check out this winter...

It's a great rally. You should go, looks like 11/5 this year; CSCC Schedule
