What speakers came standard w/ 86?

My 86 onlyhas the two 4 inchers in the dash. Where were the other speakers at if the person were to get that option? I heard that one year came with 7 speakers!?! I know the woofer was under the seat.

I have 2, 4 inchers I want to put somewhere else in the mr2, but don't know where the other stock ones went.

The 87+ cars had 3.5" speakers in the interior b-pillar trim, in addition to the 4" dash speakers.
You can sometimes find these trim pieces on Ebay or the parts for sale forum.
Or, cut into yours.

'86 cars only came with the 2 dash speakers and the "sub" under the seat.

Isn't 3.5" the stock front speaker size? I thought 87+ had 4 inchers in the rear window pillars.

My 86 had 4" up front and the holes in the metal for the 3.5" in the rear, but not the correct interior trim pieces. All you have to do is run the wires, change out the trim and you have 4 speakers!

My 86 only had the two 4" in the dash and any cars I've seen in the yards have been the same.

No

85/86 only came with dash speakers and an optional under-seat sub (4")

The 87+ rear pillar speakers are worthless, I wouldn't even waste your time. Take the time and energy you'd spend adding them to your car and put that towards better 4" speakers or even 6.5" door speakers

No. The '86 had only the 4inch in the dash and the crappy sub under the driver seat. Definately test fit any 4 inch before you but. The driver side is very shallowb/e of the cross brace under ther dash. If you really want to add some sound, get new dash speakers and add some 5.25s or 6.5s in the doors. They can fit if you have power windows. I use a spacer ring made from 3/4 inch plywood covered in black carpet from Walmart. If you remove the power window box and lay it in the bottom of the door, the ring should be enough for the speaker to fit. The rings I use blend in with the black carpet on the doors to point that it almost looks factory. Get good speakers and give them enough power.
I also have 3/4 inch Orion XTR softdome tweeters mounted on the back wall just above shoulder hight. They counter sink in the carpet a little and blend in pretty good. Mine came with their own crossover modules so I put them in the center compartment. Can't see any wiring and from the outside it's hard to even see any speakers b/s everything is black.
Toss the factory sub and you have room under each seat for an amp. if you need 2 of them.
If you want cheap bass put a Bazooka behind each seat. At 5'11" I have room behind each seat for 1 6.5" Bazooka and still haveplenty of leg room.
I also have tweeters in each door at the top close to the mirrors.

Yes I really have 10 speakers and 2 amps in a 1986 MR-2. It's all left over from my younger days and yes my hearing is half shot.
Lucky my wife is going to school to be an audiologist.
Yes

I have 3.5" Pioneers in my dash, they are listed by Pioneer as a direct replacement. They even have the factory harness clips. They clear the dash bracing easily, and they sound great. I also run 100 watts to each, so that helps with the windows down.
edit: I double checked, and they are 4". But they are still drop in replacements and have no trouble clearing the brace.

I have the rear trim speaker pillars, I don't use them, the PO put them there, and I don't like speakers behind my head. If you want them, I'll send them to you if you'll pay shipping and send me your pillars...assuming they're black anyway.

I installed the rear speakers in my car (had to modify the area a little to fit some 4" thin line speakers back there, but it sounds great. If I turn off my rears, my sound is not nearly as good (I've got Fosgates all the way around). I also have two 6" subs behind the seats, and they're tuned to give great overall dynamic range. Without my subs, and my rears, it really does sound terrible. I can't imagine it without them!

Hmmmmm, I think two 4 inchers next to my head would suck, I thought the panels were for the door...so no, but thanks for the offer (and yes mine are black, sorry!) maybe I'll make some kick panels for my 4's or get some 6's and make some kick panels.

I looked under my dash speaker panels and there are some pioneers there...I can deal with that, they look brand new. I have 4 inch infiniti's in my corolla which I will pull and fashion into the two. It's such a small space in there that big speakers might not sound good. (for my taste)

The speakers behind my trim are 3.5". Some cheap infinity's. I don't have them wired in though, the Boston FX-4's on my dash are way more than loud enough with 35w RMS. External amp, not head unit garbage.

I was thinking...In my door panels there is a 'map pocket'. A place to put trash or something. Seeing as I never use it, could I not just put the speakers there? They would be in the door, and I wouldn't have to mess with messing with the window. Would it be wise to cut a 4 inch hole into this?

^ alot of people have put 6.5s in the doors in the map pocket area. The pictures ive seen looked good. Im going to be putting a pair of 6.5 mid bass drivers in them. Ill just close off part of the top of the pocket so you cant see the magnet.

Tough part is wiring it through the doors... any tips?

I know that there are already some wires going through my doors...let me see if i can dig up a pic...one sec

Ahh yes: disregard the wire I am holding, look right behind it at the wire going through the door to the body. I am guessing to run it through the same hole if you have one. The wire has been cut (see my hand) so I don't know what it went to.
