Pop-up headlight drag

Ever wonder how much drag your pop up headlights on the MR2 create? Find out!

Nice work. I will be sure to turn off my lights if I get into a race at night. haha. Kidding... sort of.... I will have my headlights down but my super bright fog lights will be on. Thanks for the info!!!

So that's why a mr2 acts like a crank bait when driving at higher speeds at night. Aero buckets just moved up my priority list.

I remember reading a C&D or was it R&T article about someone performing a real-world test on the SW20 on this. The difference at the upper limit was 4 or 5mph I believe (open windows are even worse for drag BTW).

Good stuff! I'm not an expert, but I do find this aero-stuff pretty interesting. Seeing this headlight drag makes me wonder about our side mirrors as well...

I've seen another member on here who makes slim side mirrors for the Mk1. I wonder if there would be a measurable advantage to running something like that; I understand a protruding side mirror in general will create significant drag, but it would certainly be interesting to see a future episode comparing (and visualizing) our stock mirrors to some alternative mirror forms [or even none at all].

Apologies if I'm OT here, there's probably research out there on the subject already, but I figured I'd mention it after seeing this. I'm not sure how feasible it would be anyways working in scale or using your water channel rig, but it's some food for thought nonetheless!
