V6 Swap Down the Road

Hey all,

I have a 92 NA that I would like to swap a 2GR into at some point, but that might not be for a long time. Are there any things I can upgrade along the way that would make the swap a little easier? I was thinking maybe upgrading the transmission to the E153 at some point. What about getting a bigger radiator before the swap or maybe upgrading the fuel pump?

The bigger radiator is not necessary for the V6 swap but many MR2 radiators are getting rather old so it isn't a bad plan. The fuel pump is something you want to avoid if at all possible until the drivetrain is out. it's *MUCH* easier to drop the tank without the engine/trans in the way.

The E153 swap is not a bad plan but if i were you i'd just buy it and refresh it or get it refreshed and not swap the parts in until the swap.

That makes sense about the transmission. I knew the fuel pump was a pain in the ass to replace, but I didn't know it was that bad.

Yeah, the problem is all those little hoses on the back of it. I swapped pumps in 25 minutes once in the middle of a race but my hands looked like i had gone 10 rounds of boxing against a woodchipper when i was done. It's really a 2-3hr task at the quickest and you'll learn a whole new way to curse by the end of it. If you remove the engine it's pretty easy because you can access all the hoses from the engine bay instead of from the bottom.

I don't think there's a lot you can change until it's time. When I did mine, I spent about a year collecting parts before doing the swap and then did it all at once.

Do you have a ballpark idea of what you spent in all? 10k to 12k?

I have a ballpark idea of what I spent for a 93NA to 2GR conversion. This list does not include engine work (cams), or brake and suspension work, or radiator, or reconditioning the interior - it's focused mainly on components that would be needed for a basic swap. Some items have gone down in price from when I did this (vvti oil line was $70 now it is $25), others have gone up (Denso AFR sensors were $55 now they are $105). You can save some money on new components that were not available when I did the swap, like for example the new(er) Wilhelm y-pipe instead of the DDPR. Anyway this puts you on the ballpark. As you can maybe tell from this list, converting from an S54 to an e153 took a major chunk of change and it was also the most tedious and difficult part of doing the swap.

Engine $1,200 great deal from salvage tested good
e153 trans $1,000 had to rebuild syncros
Turbo axles and hubs $800 + rebuild axles and new bearing cost
ECU $600 including de-immobilization service by Gouky
2GR harness $200 salvage
Harness conversion $700 mr220v
Motor mount $400 gouky
Turbo transmission mounts $250 needed for NA
Headers $700 gouky
Y-pipe $1,200 ddpr
Exhaust $500 Berk
Pedal & Adapter $300
Intake $120 ebay special
Water neck $100 gouky
AFR sensors $110 denso amazon
MAF $50 used ebay works fine
Hoses $150
Coolant $25
Oil &Filter $50
Spark plugs $40
Belt $30
AC hoses $100 + crimping service from hose shop.
Injector cleaning $120 really recommended
Water pump $100 (suggested)
VVTI oil line $70 (suggested)
Fuel pump $150 walbro 255lph
FPR $300 - aeromotive with new fuel lines, fittings, and filter
Flywheel and clutch $500
Clutch slave and hose $60
Starter $100
Alternator $160
AC pump $80
Tach from 1mz $45
