Carrier bearing for 1mz

So what has everyone done for the carrier bearing issue using the turbo trans. I have been using the s54 so there was no issue. I have the 1mz carrier from my donor. Did you guys fab a mount or do in need to swap the carrier to my axle

Just use the carrier from a v6 and cut off the mount part. If using a turbo trans u need both axles, (if LSD u need the LSD style output flanges) The right axle requires machining for a 1/4" spacer so the axle slids in the correct amount.

My donor was of course an auto and I'm using LSD axles hubs and of course LSD in tranny. Axles slide right in both sides. Bit if you size up the 1mz carrier and axle it is shorter than the mr2 carrier axle. So you say I should just have the one axle pressed out and the mr2 axle pressed to the right place on the axle?

^^ +1 - if you look close you can see the 4mm "spacer" next to the bearing on the axle/hub side of carrier.
YES use the MR2 turbo axles.

4mm or 1/4" (6.4mm)? Or is it not that critical and anywhere in that range works?

I'd love to know the answer to this as well. Also, is the intermediate shaft itself getting machined or is a spacer being machined to fit on the shaft (as in the above picture)?

I've been gathering 1MZ swap info for awhile and I'm surprised this step isn't better documented TBH.

Both. The spacer moves the bearing away from the flange where the CV bolts together, and that requires a new groove to be made for the snap ring that holds the bearing on the shaft. The groove is not pictured in this thread, but it would be on the opposite side of the bearing carrier in that photo.

So here is what I did:

I found this aluminium spacer in an old hard drive, it is 0.26" wide and had a ID of 40mm. I opened that up to about 41.15mm by chucking in my wood lathe and cutting with a dremel tool.



Then I heated it up with a propane torch and dropped it on to the shaft. If fell in to place and once it cooled it was stuck on there. (Press would have worked too)



I cut a slot in the inner race of the old carrier bearing so I could easily slip it on the axle. I put the whole thing in my wood lathe.



Using the inner race as a guide I used an angle grinder to cut a new groove for the snap ring. The groove is about 1.2mm deep and 2.3mm wide.



Since my cutting wheel was less than 2.3mm wide, I shimmed the race over once I made a cut to the right depth, and then widened the groove again using the race as a guide.



Laugh all you want but the snap ring groove actually came out really well.



I pressed on the bearing, again the old inner race was helpful to make sure the press only pushed on the inner race of the new bearing.



The snap ring sits in place nicely and everything lines up perfect. The dust shield also still fits on the axle.

For reference this is how it all lines up...

Here is the shaft pushed in to the transmission until it bottoms out



Here is the final location of the shaft with the 0.26" spacer



Based on my rough measurements this puts the shaft 3/16" outside of bottoming out, and still has 1/16" of the splines on the backside of the differential gear. (As in the splines go completely through the gear plus an extra 1/16") The seal on the transmission seems to line up just fine too.

As a side note, before I found the hard drive spacer I determined that some steel pipe, size 1.75" with 0.065" wall thickness should work as spacer stock. It would have an I.D. of 1.62" which is a couple thousands under the shaft size of ~41.2mm and would make a nice press fit. This pipe is readily available.
