Someone tried doing that in a Fiero. They even fit in it transverse (stock layout), though I don't see how. There's a build thread on the Fiero forum somewhere. As I remember, the project was never finished. There was also a guy in Sweden who dropped a BMW V8 in a Fiero, and there were videos of that, but they've since been taken down. The car sounded like sex though. There's nothing quite like a high-revving DOHC V8 or V12 .

So you're using an Audi transmission? Since you're going longitudinal, you should go ahead and put a couple GT35's on there too , I bet there's enough room for them.

That could come later for someone else to do, i'll be running this one NA and on LPG, the goal is just to achieve a working V12 Mr2.

The LS9 swap north/south swap would be pure insanium, somebody has to do that.

Irmr2, i know what you mean, it seems pretty impossible but we have found a way to make it happen. The usual Audi TDi trans that i used on the V8 won't work on the V12 swap, because even though the axles are near the bellhousing face they are still giving away a good 7" of drivetrain length. That's 7" more the engine has to poke into the cabin, now you can get away with that on the V8, it's very short, but the V12 is a long engine (29" unmodified)... that would put your face in the steering wheel.

Luckily Audi have just started producing this bad boy...

Take a look at where the output tulips are, right on the bellhousing face, that's a good 7" saved. This is a 6 speed box and attached to the 2010 model A4. We have one of these on the way. This trans would also bolt to the Audi V8 "i think" without an adapter plate, meaning a north/south V8 can happen with no front firewall mods..... uber cool.

I have so far lost 2" from the front of the V12, which gives me an overall length saving of 9" at the moment, that puts me into audi V8 length territory, which we know fits.
How thick will the engine to trans adaptor plate be? That will probably add a few inches to the total length. Also I didn't see it mentioned but will you be moving the cabin firewall forward like the mk1 v8?

Well the adaptor will be 25mm thick in total, so about an inch added to the length. Yes it will definately need the front firewall moving.

Nah - been mentioned before mate. BUT the big problem would be the transmission.... Something strong enough that is.

Indeed, you'd be pushing the limits of the Audi trans to the edge of the known torquiverse!

"One" of my Audi A5 gearboxes arrived today, all your fault Ross, i'm buying them in bulk!

The great news is this box weighs a lot less than my A4 box in my Mk1, i wish this had been around when i was doing that project, i reckon it's a good 20kgs lighter. The first thing that's very apparent is the diff area, i am going to have to remove engine block material in this area on the V12 (V8 looks like it will need modifying too), but it shouldn't be a huge problem.

Some dimensions for the tranny whores...

Oops! wrong link! That'll teach me for typing tranny whore into google

The middle of the output shafts are 45mm from the bellhousing face, now i have estimated i will need a 1" thick adapter plate on the V12, but the shafts sit 7" further forward on this box than the older A4 unit, so by my maths i am gaining 4.25" of space by using this gearbox, that's a huge amount. It also means on a V8 swap i gain 5.25", that definately puts the Audi V8 inside the engine bay without having to cut the front wall (at least at the bottom of it and should only need a top access panel if that)

So, so far it's all good news, although there is a very long way to go.

tranny may not be quite as weak as thought - the A5 comes with 210 hp but 260 ft/lb torque...
