Front speaker suggestions for '89 MR2

I am looking to replace my front 4" speakers. After search the site, I still cannot seem to determine speakers that would be an easy drop-in replacement. Can someone provide me with some model numbers that would work? Preferably ones that are still being sold. Thanks in advance.

Almost any 4" speaker will work, you just have to cut off two of the mounting tabs with a tin snips or whatever and it'll drop right in and attach with the remaining two tabs. You then effectively convert it to the obscure "4T" style that is difficult to find these days. I'm currently using Alpine SPS-100A, and they fit perfectly with the two tabs trimmed and I've done the same thing with probably five other sets over the years. Just pick something with a tweeter that doesn't stick up too far so it doesn't hit the grille. Also, try to stay with something at or under 2" in depth (not a problem with most 4").

Btw, of course cutting the tabs off probably voids the warranty, so test them before you do it.

Also, if you have no tin snips you can just bend back flat 2 of the mounting tabs.
That's what I did in my old '86.

I've found that at 2", the drivers side will hit the structural bar in the dash. try to get speakers with as shallow a mounting depth as possible. The alpines (like ron has) will drop in and sound great.

I have a set of 4" Alpines that were in my 2. Upgraded to components and no longer need them. Give me a shout if you want them. Cheap.
