DIY E153 Axle Gaskets

I needed some new gaskets for where the axle meets the stub shaft on my v6 project. I think you can still buy them, but I've heard people have had trouble with the cork and prefer fiber. I also wanted them immediately. Here is how I cut my own out of .030" gasket paper using a scanner and a Cricut. There's no way I'm the first to think of this, but I'm so happy with the results, I had to share.

Step 1:

Scan the CV hub. I put a sheet of plastic wrap over it to keep grease off my scanner.

Step 2:

Import your image to AutoCAD as a template and draw the outline of the gasket (you could probably also use GIMP, which is free, or a dozen other programs)

Step 3:

Export as a .bmp (for some reason the Cricut software doesn't import .dxf files correctly, at least I can't get it to work) and import to the Cricut software.

Step 4:

Cut a test part on plain paper, check the scale, and adjust as needed in the Cricut software. For some reason the parts come out a bit big at 100%, but a little adjusting and testing on plain paper will let you get a perfect fit.

Step 5:

Cut your gasket. For my .030" paper I used the deepest cut setting and a 'fine point blade' and the strong grip mat.

Since my paper is only .030", and the recess for the gasket is also .030" I'm going to stack two of them. If you had slightly thicker paper I'm sure you could cut it, since mine was cutting in to the mat.

If anyone wants the .dxf or .bmp just PM me, they are too large to upload here.

Pretty slick, nice write-up too.

We need more of these DIY threads now that parts are dwindling even faster than just last year.
