Cool thread! I have access to some Polk data through work and got to mess with some reports last night and today. This data is called "VIO" or Vehicles in Operation. It is basically all used and new registrations for a particular Make and Model, without reg's that have been "inactive" for 18 months. So this is basically a snapshot of all MKII MR2's that are still on the road today. This will not include track cars, project cars that have not been registered in 18 months, etc.

Narrowed down by year (1991-1995):

1991 Turbo: 4,361
Non: 8,711
1992 Turbo: 668
Non: 2,042
1993 Turbo: 1,203
Non: 2,550
1994 Turbo: 202
Non: 272
1995 Turbo: 84
Non: 163

Total: 20,256

I make no claim for this data to be 100% accurate. These are based off registrations, so there can be all kind of errors on the county, state level, etc. But according to the Sport Compact Car article, there were 21,580 made, so this may be pretty accurate.

Here's the best MKI data I could get. I couldn't figure out how to break it out by Supercharged or Non.

Again, this is VIO data, so these are basically MKI's still on the road today:

1985: 3,637
1986: 7,832
1987: 5,896
1988: 3,931
1989: 3,020

Total: 24,316

It's funny, according to this data, the '92s are a little more rare than the 93's. I don't think I've seen anyone brag about how rare their '92 is

Maybe people just have their '93's locked away in hiding and don't register them?

Again, the data might be suspect, but it is what it is...

That explains why it's so easy to find people parting out 1986's and 1986's for sale on craigslist.

Also my 1986 has a sunroof!

Any idea how many 91 hardtop turbos were imported?

i could have sworn i heard somewhere that they didnt make a complete run in 92, so that is why they are more rare than 93. have no idea if thats true or not.

mmhm. The info is really weird about the 95's. I could have sworn there were 356 produced.

it's really low. Not 13 total like the 93 hardtop turbos, but low enough.

I've seen/heard of like four in the state of CA, 2 in northern, 1 in socal, and one more just showed up at chicoraceworks in northern cali.

4 in a state that we know of is pretty damn small! I'm sure there are more, but out of the hundreds who post between norcal and socal there are only four that I know of, so definitely small numbers!

If we go off jdmkevin's number of 1991 Turbo: 4,361

I'd say maybe 60-150 are hardtop turbos? Just a guess. Remember when this car came out, it was much nicer to get a ttop car then a regular hardtop!

You're correct, just remember the 356 figure is production numbers, the above are "registered" numbers. They don't count totaled cars or ones that have not been registered within the past 18 months...

Whoa, only four known in Cali? I might have the only one in NH, then!

Supercharged with Automatic Production numbers

Does anyone know how many of those 1988 Supercharged MR2's in the USA were automatic's? It seems finding historical production data filtered by options such as transmission, color, etc. is very difficult with Toyota's. Thanks

and all the cars that ended up in Canada seems 50% of the Left hand cars here are from the state's, are left out of that number.

92's are rare. I have only seen one in person compared to a dozen or so 93's.

Interesting, if that info is accurate there were apparently a few '95 models still on dealer lots all the way into '97.

That sure seems like a silly requirement, that you must have 10 posts to view the information. I have a 91 MR2 turbo that I bought new that came with a manual sun roof and no fog lights straight from the factory, so how rare is that???
