6 speed conversion and higher final gear

Poking around on the internet and found a few things, and have questions...

Stock Gearing
Turbo:
Final Drive.......4.29:1
1st Gear Ratio..3.23:1
2nd Gear Ratio..1.91:1
3rd Gear Ratio...1.32:1
4th Gear Ratio...0.92:1
5th Gear Ratio...0.73:1

NA:
Final Drive.......4.176:1
1st Gear Ratio..3.285:1
2nd Gear Ratio..1.960:1
3rd Gear Ratio...1.322:1
4th Gear Ratio...1.028:1
5th Gear Ratio...0.820:1

5th gear conversion for NA
0.73:1 compared to the stock 0.82:1. Same as turbo.

6 speed conversion
1st gear 3.166
2nd gear 2.050
3rd gear 1.481
4th gear 1.166
5th gear 0.916
6th gear 0.725

Final drive 4.529

Final drive conversion
3.933 final drive vs. stock 4.285

1. This company (Woodsport) does a conversion in the UK for a celica. Looks like they use a gear from a diesel version of the transmission, but that ratio is identical to our turbo transmission. I was hoping the diesel would be even lower than ours. Also, it looks like there is a 7th gen celica.

http://www.woodsport.org/joomla/inde...21-lsd-gearbox

2. I saw some post somewhere that the j160 transmission (6 speed) will bolt up and is usable on any "G" motor. I think the correct designation for our motor is the "S" motor, but will it bolt up?

3. Final gear ratio seems to be straight forward to change. http://gtfour.supras.org.nz/428ratio.htm. There seems to be a lot of options here if we want.

4. Any American companies doing what Woodsport does? Seems like it would be simple to get the diesel version of the 5th gear. I have always thought the 200 rpms that 5th gear gives back is almost useless.

Anyway...I was thinking about converting a left over e153 to limited slip. I have a carbonetic 1.5 way. I think I will go with a different final drive to a little top end. When I saw the 6 speed, it was interesting. I wonder if it is strong enough.

Okay, i'm confused about what you are trying to do..

J160 is a gearbox for a FR configuration... not much use in a MR2.

The 6spd conversion gearbox is the internals from C series box from 2zz-ge celica adapted/rehoused to fit a 4age MkI mr2 (aw11). They are pretty weak boxes (as lotus owners have found out), and a 3sgte would likely shred it in no time (if you managed to mate them somehow). Its the same family of gearbox as off a mk3 mr2 (zzw30)

I know that the j160 is for the FR, but someone posted that it would fit any G engine and even listed the 3sg. I had never heard that it would fit. I had not heard about the diesel gears. I was curious about them being different.

Ultimately, I probably care most about lowering the gearing in my car just to get more top end and lower rpm at highway speeds. That can be done with the 3.933 final drive. Secondly, I personally don't like the ratio of 5th gear. Maybe for stock it works, but the % difference is too low for me. If I calculate the % difference of the gears, I get:

1st -> 2nd = 40.87% difference
2nd -> 3rd = 30.89% difference
3rd -> 4th = 30.30% difference
4th -> 5th = 20.65% difference

It would be nice if 4th to 5th remained around 30% like the other gates. When I shift the gears, I always think first is too granny, the 2nd to 3rd shifts are great. So is 4th, but then I don't get much out of 5th gear.

As I understand it the J160 came on the GXE10 1gfe Altezza/Lexus Is200 and also on the JDM SXE10 3sge powered Altezza (RS200), but with different bellhousing/front case to suit 1G and 3S motors.

So basically you completely missed the 6 speed post on the front page of the Woodsport website.

It's not available, and they said it will be expensive with limited supply. < 12 In question #4, I asked specifically if someone in the US was going to do something similar to them. Looks like a good project/package.

Not a package in process I am aware of. The j160 does have its limitations so doubtful it'd be good for any turbo application over 300whp

Other cars with FWD style transaxles spend HUGE money to have the reliability of a stock E153. It truly baffles me why people keep thinking it would be a good idea to swap it out for something else..

Don't really want to change the transmission, but would like to investigate gearing. Any time I look for simple ways to change gearing, I find this 6 speed stuff. I just don't like 1st, 5th, and final drive gears. Looks to be easy to change final drive.

Actually we have just completed the first 2gr Mk2 6 speed conversion, first time anyone worldwide has this transmission in a running car as far as i'm aware, and it will be offered as a kit very soon once we have nailed down final parts costs.

It won't be cheap, budget for over $3000, but we can at least offer it.
