Clemson Univ FSAE
I'm not on the team but I work with the team captain and a senior FSAE member...I also try to help out problem solving and what not...
It's not all it's cracked up to be. Your social life goes to zero, your sleep goes to zero, your grades go down(not quite to zero, but pretty close)..... And for some reason I'm still on the team. I think FSAE can very accurately be compared to crack or crystal meth.... You know it's bad for you, but you just can't get away from it.
That is our extremely bare chassis about 2 months ago. Nothing more current.
Powder speaks the truth, although my sleep and grades haven't declined too much. I put in roughly 25hrs a week building the car. Sole tig welder of the vehicle and one of the few that actually fabricate in general, but its fun.
FSAE is worth it, if you don't get addicted to it. With anything in life, do it in moderation.
I loved my time in it, but my life really sucked as I became completely obsessed and consumed; living out of the shop, donating thousands of my own money, and not going home for holidays to design/fabricate crap for the car. Although, I am making quite a bit more than the average B.S engineering salary due to FSAE and had zero issues in the job market.
In the end, you just need to evaluate what you plan to gain out of the experience.
We aren't close to a test run yet, tons of work and only maybe 3 people willing to put in the time. I won't be so involved next year, that is for sure. 1000+ man hours is a lot to ask of a college student.
