The Giant Cup Holder Thread

I use my Mk2 all the time for everyday errands, and to go to/from work, etc. as well as for fun. So I need cup holders. I am not particularly enthralled with the DIN type as they get in the way.

Anyway, I am starting this giant cup holder thread, as I found there is a lot of fragmented info on this board about cup holders, and lots of dead links to eBay listings, and deap photo links.

So, to start off, here are links to prior discussions, and then I will move on to other ideas.

The Shoe: Simply use an old shoe on the floor. Hightops are recommended. Screwing the sole the floor might work better.

Closely related to the Shoe is the Duct Tape Roll. Easy to install, as the sides of the roll are partly sticky. For those of you in hot weather, it might be really messy.

DIN mount, and Fischer Universal Cup Holder screwed to the side of the gas tank Tunnel:

Now here are some interesting ideas:

Comparisons of various cup holders for BMW's. Door pocket mounts, center console, Cage style dash mounts

Anyone know if these marine universals are good quality, or are they flimsy? Are they as good as the Fishers?

Super fancy and expensive aluminum Lotus cup holder for the Elise/Exige. I think it bolts to seat brackets under the seats. There is a lot more to this cup holder than is shown here:

Another BCS, but this one is bolt on:

My own Ideas:
For those of us that do not want to drill holes in our cars, and we have the center storage box, attach a flat aluminum plate or bracket to the car, between the box and the firewall carpet (the box and its mount screws holds the bracket in place). The bracket would extend out sideways towards the seats. The cup would end up between the headrests and the seats on the firewall. So, it would be up by your ear or jaw. If you're in the driver's seat, it would be on your right.

The cup holder can be attached to the mount plate/bracket. I did something similar to mount my radar detector up next to my domelight, hidden by the visor.

This mount can do double duty as well. It would be good for mounting a Fire Extingusher, and for mounting a in-car camera.

Another idea is to attach a bracket to the front screws that hold the seat tracks. The bracket would hold the drink, so that it sits on the floor, directly under your knee. FOr the driver, it would be under the right knee. Alternatively, it can be centered, so its easier to reach while driving.

Corvette door mount:
http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?pf_id=41465&dept_id=1611

This is an alternative way to mount a Fisher Universal: They used a piece of clear plastic against the tunnel, slipped under the arm rest at the top. The Fisher is screwed to the plastic. This eliminates drilling the car.

Porshe (old air cooled) cup holder (no longer made), but an interesting idea:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_cup_holder/911_cup_holder.htm

Another idea I had was to add another armrest on top of the existing armrest. Can be attached by a thin bracket to the center storage box holes, or possibly to the two holes in the side of the factory armrest that holds it to the tunnel. Then some slide out, or swing out cup holders can be integrated into the armrest. LIke this one: http://www.birdautomotive.com/boxster.htm

A quick and cheap way to do this is to buy a Volvo armrest with drink holder off of EBay

Nice work cbulen!

Here are some better pics of the fischer cupholder from ultimatecupholders.com:

I've used these for years in a few different mr2s and have been really happy with them. They are very well built!

Also another option that I have seen some people do in other cars is the passat cupholder:
http://www.corradocentral.com/cupholder.htm
I don't think it is as nice as the fischer and it is a lot more expensive. But it's another option worth mentioning...

Servin: I don't understand. I don't see where it would go on a mk2. Is your idea for the mk1 or 3 ?

Another cigarette lighter socket mount

Can't forget the "Ultimate" cup holder.

Very fancy and expensive tunnel side mount dual cup holder. Apparantly, it can be clamped on as well as screwed:
http://www.928motorsports.com/parts/cupholder.php
It would go in front of the shifter but after looking at it it much too long it would have to be shorten and require some cutting.

I was thinking also about a 2cup holder that molds into the angled curve at end of the armrest, gas tunnel. So it kind of would look like a shorten version of the center console and only fit drinks.

wow, your taking this cup holder thing to another level.

anything will work.

here is mine

I have a pretty nice interior, and I have some pretty stringent requirements:
1) No permanent mods to the car (drilling the dash, armrest, etc), unless the mods cannot be seen if removed. Drilling the gas tank tunnel would qualify (as long as the tank isn't peirced).

2) drink should be out of the way of the driver and passenger when its in the cup holder.

3) should be able to hold the drink under high G forces (braking, cornering, accell)

4) look decent, not ghetto

5) drink should be at least somewhat easily accessable. This rules out the Brunk or Frunk !

I use an all stainless thermos most of the time (vacuum chamber, inner liner is stainless instead of glass). http://www.thermos.com/Product_detail.aspx?CatCode=THER&SubcategoryID=1&ViewAll=true&ProductID=282

Its got a water proof seal on the pop-top lid. The lid opens at the touch of a button. Right now, it goes under my seat, laying on its side. Its the size of a small fire extinguisher. I had in mind a way to mount it like a fire extuingsher. It can't be used for hot drinks, though, as its not designed for this. The plastic used for the lid is not rated for hot liquids. I can taste plastic in the coffee the last time I tried it.

The main problem I have is spilling my coffee. Besides the above thermos, I have been wedging my coffee cup -- an insulated reusable one-- between my thigh and the center tunnel. THis works OK while driving. However, the other day, I went to get out of the car, forgetting the mug. Coffee all over my driver's seat, in spite of the lid being closed. It slowly leaked out, as I did not discover it until later. This is one of my biggest gripes.

Wedging it between the door and my left thigh means I sometimes forget when I open my door and coffee spills. Also, the wedge technique should not be used for paper cups.

Anyway, it would be very cool if we had some kind of cup holder loop that swung out, or slid out when in use. I found that 94-97 mustang holders are cool, but require the console: http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/hitech/hitech4.htm

Something made for our cars, maybe out of anodized aluminum would be cool. one of the MR2 vendors should check this out.

Having owned a 1995 Mustang GT from new -> 2003, that cup holder was junk ;) My Volvo S70 has similar holders, and they make me want to burn the car to the ground.

The only vehicle I've owned that I liked the cup holder(s) on is my wifes 2008 Toyota Yaris. Besides having like... 72 cup holders, the ones that flip out from the dash hold about anything you could imagine.

It turns out that the part number listed in the installation instructions did not come up in the system. So they must have used another number for the US market or something. I can just barely make out the number on the box so ill just try random numbers to see if i get something.

I posted this in a different thread on accident. Might be useful to some.

I have this cup holder

I bought it around 3 years ago. I think it came out of a Camry or something. I still have the Toyota box it came in, but unfortunately the sticker with the part number is halfway worn off and I can't really make it out anymore. The part number on the cup holder itself doesn't match up with the one on the box either.
The top of it is the cup holder and there is a pull out felt lined tray for change.
when the cup holder or tray are popped out the are curved towards the driver. Its a pretty nice very stock looking piece.

EDIT: The cup holder came complete with an install guide all in Japanese. It seems to have a part number on it. 08171-10060
I work at a dealership so I'll check tomorrow to see if this part is still available.
