Very nice!! You guys run the goodyear's? We've run Michelin's for a while at Auburn since we are sponsored but we might be looking to other options this year. I'll see if I can get a picture of Auburn up soon. We're supposed to be doing some tire testing this weekend.

I never realized how much weight we were sacrificing in the tires, but each michelin weighs in at 13.5lbs, each goodyear at 8.8lbs, and each of the fattest hoosiers at 11.5lbs. We can potentially save about 20lbs on our car simply by switching to goodyear's..

Especially with it being rotating, and unsprung. And the longevity of the new goodyear compound is pretty surprising especially with the reduced weight from previous goodyears.

I'd count on the top three or four typical goodyear teams making a bit of a splash at michigan this year plus maybe a surprise foreign team or two on them as well

Well Michelin could potentially be dropping their FSAE program, at least here in the states after this season, and we're tired of running on slower and heavier tires to be honest. Don't be surprised if we show up with the new goodyear compound either....we'll use whatever tire gives us the biggest advantages. Hopefully that decision will be made this weekend with our tire test.

According to our tests and simulations the new goodyear compound seems to be the winner. We ran some un-official 4.9's with 1.5g in some skidpads. But we're still finalizing our tests so the official decision hasn't happened yet.

I am surprised that when you did your chasis design you did not use certain tires, wheels and suspension in that process. I understand why tires make such a big difference but I am just surprised to see that other options are being considered so late in the season. Osprey Racing will be running Hoosiers this year. And we finally bought a new set of slicks and rains.... Finally we are off the scrubs that we have been driving on for the last few weeks.

We did design for the michelin tires. However, they seem to be ending their fsae program here in the states so we wanted to test the other tires out to see what kind of advantage/disadvantage we actually have. Today, we actually ran 2 seconds faster on a 30 second track with goodyears compared to michelins. The Goodyear tires also save a total of 20lbs on our car compared to the radial michelin compound. The radial michelin compound just can't seem to get enough heat whereas the goodyear compound actually gets a good amount of heat in it.

It's always nice to design around a single tire. But why not test different tires after the car is running?? Just because it seemed like the best choice on the computer doesn't mean it will be the best in reality. There is no replacement for physical testing.

We are finishing up the side pods, nose cone and refining our pneumatic shifting currently... We will probably show up with a rusty chassis though. Vehicle testing is promising considering we are a first year team. None the less UNF will be in Michigan with a vehicle this year!

That's awesome! Congrats to you guys! The competition really completes the experience! I've already been to 3 of them and all of them were awesome. Remember, Murphy's Law always applies to Formula teams, so keep that in mind when packing...

Well, we had 6 weeks of nearly flawless running...Then today I literally drove the wheels off the thing....the body has had better days too. It was a long day to say the least.

We had spares for everything, the car kept running after all the carnage. Just still have to make a new body panel.

Was the failure due to fatigue? Or what was the cause of the failure?

Fatigue. The corner that broke is the heaviest loaded on both courses we setup and have done all our testing so far. We were sill surprised that it broke though.

What was it specifically that broke? The wheel itself? Wheel studs?

The flanged hub where the wheel mounts. The lobes where the wheel studs are all sheared off.
