Equipment and Mounts ~ ChaseCam

Randy Chase, a long time mods here on the MR2OC has a company called ChaseCam. He makes and sells analog and digital recording equipment that is race tested. I even use some of his cameras and mounts for my track events that we film.

He has a sweet headrest mount for your camcorder that requires no modifications to your car. sweet stuff

Yes indeed.

Our Formula SAE team here at the University of Missouri-Rolla just got one of these. The quality and options of this set up is very nice. Very small and light weight; perfect for a race car.

I just bought a new chase camera called a GoPro which is only $199 and comes with 4 stick mounts and one large suction cup mount. The camera weighs under 3oz, runs on 2AAA batteries and uses 2 gig SD cards for 56 minutes of video. It has a 170 degree wide angle lens so it will capture everything. It can also do 5 mega pix photos and photos every 2 or 5 seconds for time laps.
The stick mounts can go on your helmet or the car. I mounted it where the fog light goes (mine cracked and was taken out). You can also put it outside the car with a sticky mount or suction cup. I went well over 100mph on the track and it stayed put.

too bad... you should have considered the WOTcam... www.wotcam.com

4-5 hours of video on an 8gb stick. 2-3 hours of battery life on continuous recording. no changing out batteries, ... chargable in the car if it ever does run out of battery.

WOT- Video angle is too narrow and the sound quality is not good. I heard the asian supplier was fixing that?

The 170 degree viewing angle on the gopro is too wide and creates a fisheye effect and will make close things look farther away. Sound is also meh and the cam has a slow shutter speed causing a rolling artifact.

But for the price these are not bad options. Someday you will want to step up.

The no button solution, chasecam. Totally hands free. GForce trigger recording, full data overlay. Adjustable sound. Powered by batteries or car. More mounts than anyone else. Now in use by four FORMULA 1 teams. Official camera for SPEED World Challenge. Official camera for TORC off road and ESPN. Official camera for Mazdaspeed. Official camera for V8supercars. Official camera for Leno's Garage.

Hey Randy! Long time no talk!

I've been working with the factory to fix a few things that I didnt like about the prototype that we have all the video from (mostly what youve mentioned). Various lens options, etc and microphone changes. I'm not a big fan of the fisheye lenses either, but for some reason, alot of guys really like that so we will likely offer it as an option. Im working on some different mounts for the WOTcam as well, I dont think the lens would need to be changed with the proper mounts for it.

This is with some minor audio revisions in our latest design:

For all-out integration in a race-car environment I have to agree, you've built a hell of a product. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the ChaseCam to anyone wanting a hardwired solution that brings with it all the integration advantages of that setup and doesn't mind the cost.

That being said, I see a big value in a less expensive portable unit for amateur motorsports guys and hobbyists, which is honestly a different market entirely.
